Have you ever had trouble going through on your word in your relationship with God? You decide to do something really good, and you start out doing well. But somewhere along the way, you forget what you are doing, lose sight of God, and realize later you totally lost track of what you were supposed to be doing the whole time. It has happened to me before; it happens to all of us.
Keeping your motivation going is hard, but we can always pray for God’s help when we are tempted to give up on what is right. “And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.” (1 Cor. 10:13b-c) God will help us make the decision to follow Him if we ask. But what about when we don’t even see the decisions we are making? When we stop focusing on God and only focus on other things, we often lose our ability to see the conscious decisions we are actually making. You decide you are going to spend time with the Lord every day this month, but somewhere around two weeks, you got really busy. You decide you are going to talk to your neighbor about your faith today, but you get distracted by work, school, life. It’s not so much the decision to do those things as it is remembering to do those things. How do we as Christians combat this?
We should pray. When you make that decision, whatever it may be, ask God to keep you conscious of your choice that day. Pray for this repeatedly, at different times throughout the day. Ask God to keep it heavy on your heart and mind to fulfill this goal. You can also find a place in the Bible that talks about what you have decided to do and read it. This can help you stay motivated and mindful of what you are supposed to do. And there’s no harm in finding something to serve as a reminder for you. You can leave a note for yourself, set an alarm, tie a string around your finger—whatever will best help you remember to stick to that goal. Simply writing it down or saying it aloud can help your mind process it better.
The thing we need most is prayer. Pray over that decision. Make sure it is the will of God and then ask Him for His help and guidance in carrying it out. Don’t get too stressed out that you might forget it; the Lord will help you remember. All you have to do is make sure you are actively trying to stay conscious of it (doing your part), and God will take care of the rest. Above all, it is most important to pray that you will stay focused on God. As long as you are diligently trying to live for Him, you won’t forget what you have decided to do with Him.
